From When? End of S5

History: http://justified.wikia.com/wiki/Ava_Crowder

Personality: Ava has changed a lot since the first episode. When we meet her, she’s a battered wife that chose to shoot her husband instead of take the abuse he’d dish out. It’s clear that she’s a tough woman, but she’s also very guarded. Even when she sees her childhood friend again and is openly flirting, she’s still protecting her feelings. Ava is a woman that has been hurt physically and emotionally, everything about her is broken and as of yet unable to heal.

Even though she’s painted as the ‘damsel in distress’ in the first season, she also kills that assessment by not only helping, but getting herself out of some situations. Regardless of what is threatening her, it’s not in her to give up, not after a married life of just accepting things as they come. She doesn’t trust easily, not after the betrayals that she’s faced. Even when she let Raylan in and started a sexual relationship with him, he hurt her when he said they couldn’t continue, and hurt her even worse when she watched his ex-wife walking into his motel room. From that point, we see her becoming a little harder, refusing to let people hurt her like that again. She doesn’t begin to heal until she welcomed her ‘creepy’ brother-in-law, Boyd, into her home. As they live together, she goes from more or less giving him the cold shoulder, to beginning a relationship with him. Through his open care for her, she accepts his criminal activity as a part of him, something that she swore that she’d never tolerate. By being associated with him, she goes from merely being an accomplice to not even hesitating when she takes over the local bar/whore house ‘Audreys’. Whores were the only criminal enterprise she wouldn’t tolerate Boyd taking over, but by her taking it over, it was still a part of Crowder ownership, something that helped him start putting Harlan County back where it belonged.

There’s nothing Ava won’t do for those that she cares for. By accepting who she was and what she needed to do, she was able to open herself to caring and protecting those that she loves. Even though she detests abuse and killed a man over Ellen May, one of her whores, she didn’t even hesitate going to her trailer to interrogate her after Boyd is arrested and it seems like she’s the one that told Limehouse about a murder he committed. Even more than that though, after Ellen May threatens her that there are things she ‘could’ say to the police, Ave punches her in the face, proclaiming that you don’t threaten her.

Being with Boyd gives her a confidence that she didn’t quite possess before. Whereas before she might have just shrugged off the threat, she makes sure that Ellen May knows better than to try that again. It’s more than being threatened by an employee or a whore; it’s being threatened in general. She’s even gone so far as to hit a man in the face with an iron skillet for ignoring the message that she was passing along from Boyd. Through her development in the series we see her personality shift from a widow experiencing a new found freedom, to a strong and independent woman who know what she wants and won’t stop until she has it in her hands.

Ava may be many things; girlfriend, madam, bartender, badass...but the one thing that she's always doing is looking out for 'strays'. Whether it's people or kittens, as has been noted in canon, she has nothing against bringing home a stray if she thinks that it needs help. It may be why she is so attracted to the broken individuals in canon, the ones that truly need a comforting presence. Even with her own damaged state, she tries to help others, at least until they're able to get on their feet.

Why do you think your character would work in this setting? Ava's been backed into a corner by the men she trusted most. Boyd, in her eyes, abandoning her in prison and Raylan holding her freedom in his hands.

This is a chance for her to get out and start over.

What will your character do for work?

Likely a bartender or nurse. She's got experience making drinks and it's not uncommon for her to help when their guys would be injured.

Inventory: Just the clothes on her back. Starting over means leaving everything else she knows behind.

Third-Person Sample:

Ava nervously pushed her short hair back as she stepped out into the light. For once, she was leaving her problems, getting out of Harlan and abandoning the men that had used her. This was going to be a new start, a new life...and she was more than ready for it.

Smiling brightly in the knowledge that she was finally free, she set out to see the town. Her new home that she had no intention of ever leaving. First things first, she had to find a home and a job. Hell, she could even change her name if she wanted to, but it wasn't like her reputation would have followed her here.

Picking up a paper with employment ads, she headed into the nearest saloon and took the corner seat. Glancing up when a barmaid approached, she smiled warmly. "Coffee with a splash of bourbon. Gotta figure all this out if I'm movin' in." She might not have any money, but she'd flirt with a guy if she had to to get him to pay for her coffee.

Looking over the paper, she hummed softly. So many jobs that she either wasn't qualified for or interested in...great. Maybe the clinic. If she could clean a gunshot wound, she was sure she could fix whatever they got here. If they wouldn't have her, hell, there was always bars. She certainly worked in Boyd's long enough, how different could it really be here. Stopping the barmaid when she brought her drink, she leaned on the table as she kept her voice quiet. "Excuse me, darlin'...I was wonderin' if you knew of any positions that people are desperate to fill? In my experience, the more desperate, the more I could demand in pay. Believe me, I do not want to live in a yurt for the rest of my life." She'd gotten the tour of them and she was far from impressed.

First-Person Sample: Dear Diary,

I arrived in New Dodge today. Aside from the trip itself, it's been better than I thought it would be so far. The people have been welcoming and best of all, there's no one trying to blackmail me. I still can't believe what Raylan asked of me, but maybe living here, I can get back to who I used to be. I hate being this way, so jaded to the supposed good will of people, but after being hurt by the man I loved most, it's hard to forget the pain.

Living here though, I plan on getting my own land and a few animals...maybe even a husband if the right man comes along.

I'm leaving who I used to be back in Harlan. Raylan and Boyd deserve each other, I deserve better though, that's why I had to get away. I'm going to live my life for me now, not at the whims of someone else. Not letting anyone tell me what to do or how to live...I'm gonna live straight from now on. Maybe even have a few kids if the time's right, raising them with the family they deserve.

Sincerely,
Ava
